Captains Day Results

Sunday 22 July saw our 2 Captains, Graham Purnell and Claire Surgeon host their Captains Day. The competition was a Pairs Scramble + a piece of string! The only question coming from our Ex Captain, Steve Lythell, all day was, “How does this string thing work?” But afterwards all we could hear in the clubhouse was “How come we have string left?” and of course, exactly what did happen to Bret Trevellions Trolley on the 3rd!

From the looks on peoples faces, all had a good day in the Sun and with the BBQ all had a good feed.

So to the results, the Lady Captains section was won by Gwen Weller and Stephanie McDonald. In the Men’s event we witnessed a miraculous Nett 50 from Lol Trevellion and Colin Morgan, congratulations one and all.

Thanks to all that participated, oh yes and of course, thanks to Neil for participating (if unsuccessfully) at Beat the Pro on the 10th!

A little light relief!

Sam and Becky are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Sam says to Becky, "Becky, I was wondering - have you ever cheated on me?" Becky replies, "Oh Sam, why would you ask such a question now? You don't want to ask that question..."

"Yes, Becky, I really want to know. Please..."

"Well, all right. Yes, 3 times..."

"Three? Well, when were they?" he asked.

"Well, Sam, remember when you were 35 years old and you really wanted to start the business on your own and no bank would give you a loan? Remember, then one day the bank president himself came over the house and signed the loan papers, no questions asked?"

"Oh, Becky, you did that for me! I respect you even more than ever, to do such a thing for me. So, when was number 2?"

"Well, Sam, remember when you had that last heart attack and you were needing that very tricky operation, and no surgeon would touch you? Then remember how Dr. DeBakey came all the way up here, to do the surgery himself, and then you were in good shape again?"

"I can't believe it! Becky, you should do such a thing for me, to save my l ife. I couldn't have a more wonderful wife. To do such a thing, you must really love me darling. I couldn't be more moved. So, all right then, when was number 3?"

"Well, Sam, remember a few years ago, when you really wanted to be president of the golf club and you were 23 votes short..?"

Catch up time!

Here goes - if of course this sad old blogger can remember all that has happened since the last posting!

Lets start with further success in the McDonald Household! Congratulations to Colin and Stephanie McDonald who each won the respective Monthly Stablefords and Mercedes Benz Challenge in July with 42pts and 40pts respectively. Colin and Stephanie will now go forward to the Regional final at Brockett Hall on the 17th Sept.

Next we move to the Ladies Challenge Trophy. The men stepped forward like lambs to the slaughter! As it now transpires, no matter what the eventual match score is, the ladies recalculate the result so they win! So I suppose, somewhat reluctantly as one of the sacrificial lambs, I must congratulate the Ladies for retaining the Ladies Challenge Trophy. (Pictured here is the Lady Vice Captain Jean Clarke being presented the trophy by Val Walker)

The weekend of the 14/15 July witnessed the Herts Cup (for 18 handicappers and below) the Rabbits Cup (19 handicappers and over, and finally on Sunday the Ladies Betterball.

So we start with the Herts cup, I would like to applaud Steve Coombes, firstly for his outstanding round of 69 (gross) and secondly for the magnanimous way in which he accepted his and Kevin Elkins disqualification from the Herts Cup. Unfortunately the rules for the Herts cup state that the competition is open only to those members who have a handicap of 18 or less, sorry to say that Kevin did not meet this criterion.

Congratulations therefore to Paul Gillard and Kevin Hyde, who irrespective of severe hangovers and an extreme lack of sleep shot a supberb -5 betterball score to take the Herts Cup. (Paul and Kevin are picture here with the Vice Captain Colin McDonald).

So to the Rabbits cup, and it is with great delight that I announce the winners Steve Patton and Sean Ward. These 2 new members have become an active part of the membership and along with success at Grovers they now move to a bigger stage. (Sean and Steve are pictured here with the Vice Captain Colin McDonald)

OK - here comes the Maths

Sick and tired of going to Bob and getting the same response about not being cut! Sick of listening to Colin try and explain how the competition standard scratch is calculated. Well here goes - straight from the CONGU website:

How is the Competition Scratch Score calculated?
This is not a straightforward calculation. Broadly speaking, the calculations follow

1. For Men; Discount all scores returned by category 4 players (handicaps 21 to 28), for Ladies; Discount all scores returned by category 5 players (handicaps 29 to 36)
2. Calculate the percentage of players who competed in the competition in each of categories 1, 2 and 3 [and 4 for Ladies],
3. Calculate the percentage of scores returned by the category 1, 2 and 3 [and 4] players which were two over the Standard Scratch Score of the course, or better.
4. Use the percentages from (2) and (3) to determine the Competition Scratch Score by referring to one of two published tables supplied by CONGU for the purpose.

Now please tell me your any the wiser! So stop your complaining, its not the committee who are stopping you from having your handicap cut - ITS THE RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!
