2. Minutes of last years AGM. Dave Green proposed and Derek Filler seconded acceptance of the minutes for 2007.
3. Matters arising. There were no matters arising.
4. Captains’ reports.

Clare Surgeon (outgoing Lady Captain) said that her year had passed very quickly. She thanked Jean Clarke her Vice Captain for all her hard work and support. She continued by saying she had not realised the level of commitment required and found it difficult working full time and living so far away. She thanked Graham Purnell (Captain) for sharing his year with her and said how much she enjoyed golf with him. She ended by saying what a privilege it had been and wished Jean and Colin (Vice Captain) lots of luck and good wished for the coming year.

Graham Purnell (Outgoing Captain). Graham opened by saying that there were a few problems in his year and by October the Golf Course was not looking good but since the appointment of ISS Waterers the course is now looking good and should now be one of the best courses around. He followed by saying another issue, close to his heart, was the lack of junior golfers in spite of his efforts to recruit more, he was pleased to see that fees for juniors have now been substantially reduced. Graham thanked Dean Thomson (General) Manager and Kaye Bernard for their help with regard to the reduction in Junior fees.
He congratulated the Scratch Team on their successful year, having been promoted from division 5 to 4 in the County League. He mentioned that the average age of our scratch team is considerably higher than that of most other teams. He congratulated Dave Bristow, (Scratch Team Organiser) for doing a great job; he thanked Peter Wigg for running the Scratch Borders League.
He continued by thanking Bob and Val Walker for all that they do for the Club, Del Hollyoake for producing the newsletter, ISS Waterers, the Head Greenkeeper and his staff for the work being carried out on the course and the Seniors, a great group of people who he enjoyed playing with. He said that playing with Ben Goodey, our PGA Professional; he had learned how to take defeat as they were not very successful in the Captain/Pro challenge matches. He said Ben was a good Pro and a great teacher and asked members to support him.
His charity, National Deaf Children’s Society will benefit from the £2250 collected in his year he said. He recalled the longest day challenge when he, Steve Coombs, Stuart Lythell and Colin McDonald played 4 rounds of golf in a day for the charity.
He commended Colin McDonald his Vice Captain for the tremendous support he had given him, was delighted to have been Captain and having won the Club Championship in the same year, a feat he mentioned duplicated by Clare who he thanked for being a superb Lady Captain.
He concluded by reminding us what a great membership we have and that it is the Members who make the club what it is and it can only get better.

At this point, Clare presented Jean Clarke with her Lady Captain’s broach.
Colin McDonald the incoming Captain took the Chair.

Jean Clarke (incoming Lady Captain) thanked the members for giving her the opportunity of being Lady Captain. She said she wanted to enjoy her year, invited the Member to enjoy theirs, and said she wanted to get her handicap down.
Rainbow Services, a local charity would be the joint Captains’ charity this year she said and she and Colin had some novel ideas to raise money. She said she wanted to raise as much money as possible for this cause.
Jean presented Clare with a gift.

Colin McDonald spoke next, thanking the Members saying without them the Club would not exist and thanking Graham, Jean and the Committee. He thanked Graham for asking him to be his Vice Captain expressing what an honour it was.
He continued by saying that as Captain he wished for 5 things in the coming year:
To represent the members, both at home and away, with discretion, integrity and decorum;
to try and ensure that everyone in the club has an enjoyable and successful year;
to work with the Business and the Pro Shop (Ben and Neil) to encourage younger generations to play our great game, preferably here at the Manor;
that the weather is good in June for our Club Championship and our Captains Day;
and finally to raise as much money as possible for our chosen charity.
He concluded by saying that it filled him with great pride to undertake the post of Manor of Groves Captain for 2008/09.

5. Vice Captain
Colin introduced Mark Heffer as his Vice Captain and Jean introduced Giuilia Lawless as her Vice Captain.

6. Treasurer’s Report.
Alan Goodman presented the accounts, reminding members that the figures related solely to the Committee’s activities (primarily competitions). He said that we turned over £68,000 during the year. Over the year we have ended up with a surplus of around £280. Medal income is down but Stableford income is up; this has been helped by playing these over the two days at weekends. We are more than £4000 down on last year in terms of competitions income due in part to the cancellation of the Ladies Open and having fewer members. Grovers made a small surplus. We made a surplus on matches because we had more away matches than home and there was a small amount of interest from our deposit account.
Prizes and Trophies were down with smaller fields. Spending on prizes was less than last year in keeping with reduced entries. Presentations include thins like the Captain’s jacket, flowers etc. Last year under we had to spend considerable sums on new Honours Boards, trophy cabinets this is the reason that spending on improvements is significantly down this year. Dave Bristow continued his sound financial management of the Scratch Team.
There were no questions from the floor. Dick Watt proposed acceptance of the accounts, seconded by Dave Green. The meeting accepted the accounts.
Alan thanked Philip Chamberlain, Honorary Auditor, who had agreed to stand again. As there were no more nominations, Philip was accepted unanimously.

7. Election of the Committee.
The following officers remained on the Committee as of right by virtue of the Constitution:
• Colin McDonald – Captain
• Jean Clarke – Lady Captain
• Mark Heffer – Vice Captain
• Graham Purnell – Immediate Past Captain
• Giuilia Lawless– Lady Vice Captain
